Updates in the 2024 Income Tax Declaration

  • Obligation to file the declaration: All self-employed workers must file the income tax declaration, regardless of their income.
  • Reduction for employment income: The reduction for workers with incomes between 22,000 and 35,200 euros is increased, allowing refunds between 400 and 900 euros, with additional increases for those with family responsibilities.
  • Increase in the deduction for difficult-to-justify expenses: For self-employed workers taxed under simplified direct estimation, the deduction increases from 5% to 7%, with an annual limit of 2,000 euros.

Documentation Required for the 2024 Income Tax Declaration

Personal and Family Situation

  • Birth or death certificates reflecting changes in the family unit.
  • Documentation verifying the disability status of any family member.
  • Proof of payments for compensatory pensions or alimony.

Employment Income

  • Withholding certificates issued by employers.
  • In case of unemployment or retirement benefits, certificate issued by Social Security.

Business Income (Self-employed)

  • Books of income and expenses, and the Fixed Assets Book (amortizations) for the year 2024.
  • Form 130 or 131 for installment payments.
  • Form 036 or 037 for registration in the activity.

Bank Accounts and Investments

  • Bank certificate: Issued by all financial institutions you work with, both in Spain and abroad.
  • Financial investments: Documentation proving investments in stocks, mutual funds, or other financial products.
  • Housing account: If you have one, the certificate of contributions made during the last year will be required.

Real Estate

Primary Residence

  • Deeds of sale, notary and property registry fees, taxes paid related to the property.
  • If you have a mortgage signed before 2013, the amortization schedule and paid interest.
  • In case of renting, the rental contract, cadastral reference, and payment receipts.

Second Homes and Other Properties

  • IBI receipts for all properties.
  • For rented properties, contracts and receipts for related income and expenses.

Deductions and Tax Benefits

  • Certificates of contributions to pension plans.
  • Proof of donations to non-profit organizations.
  • Documents proving investments in energy efficiency improvements for the primary residence.

Download Fiscal Data from the Tax Agency

To access the fiscal data from the Tax Agency (AEAT), you will need:

  • The reference from box 505 of the previous year’s declaration or, alternatively, the bank account.
  • A copy of your Spanish DNI or NIE.

Real Estate Transactions and Transfers

  • In case of property sales, deeds of transfer.
  • For sales of stocks or cryptocurrencies, sales information and fiscal reports from platforms like Koinly, Atani, or Cointracker.

Wealth Tax

You must file this tax if:

  • Your tax amount, after applying deductions, results in a payable amount.
  • The total value of your assets and rights exceeds 2,000,000 euros, regardless of the tax amount.
  • The exemption threshold varies by autonomous community. For example, in Catalonia, it is 500,000 euros.

Special Regimes

Beckham Law – Tax for Impatriates (Form 151)

Workers displaced to Spain can apply for this special regime, paying tax as non-residents at a fixed rate of 24%, instead of the IRPF scales.

For submission, the following is required:

  • A copy of your Spanish NIE.
  • Certificate of withholding for salaries and wages.
  • Bank certificates.
  • Form 149 submitted or documentation to process it.

Income Tax Declaration as an Airbnb Host

If you earned income through Airbnb, it must be declared on your tax return.

  • If you do not offer accommodation services, the income will be calculated by subtracting deductible expenses from the total income.
